Information

What's a Phase? Are you trying to sound cool or something?

Well, yes. And failing, I'm afraid. Anyways, this is not a daily comic. It goes up in phases, which are sorta like TV seasons. Basically, I update daily for a month or so, then take a break while I prepare the next phase, then update daily again, etc. I know you'd all enjoy constant updates (unless you think the comic sucks and/or is the work of Satan, that is) but this is the best way that I can pull this off without falling behind or going insane. Whenever a phase ends, the last comic stays up until the next phase starts. All previous comics are always available in the archives.

Why does everyone's names end in "-oo?" And what's up with "Mr."--is that a name, or a title, or what?

Well, it all goes back to the ancient Romoo Empire. They dominated a large portion of the planet Foo a couple thousand years ago, and have greatly influenced language and culture. In the Romooan language, "oo" means "name." Because of the way the language worked, all names of anything had to have "oo" on the end of them. Today this isn't a requirement, but so many families and places retain names from that period that you'll find "-oo" names more often than not.

As for "Mr." (or "Mister," either one works), that's just the most popular male name in Foo. It seems kinda wacky to us, but that's the way things work. It is not an honoriffic like on Earth.

So the planet and the main character are named Foo?

So is the country. Foo was used as the planet's name by the Romooans, but they didn't come up with the name. In fact, all major cultures on the planet call it (and their country) Foo, although they are spelled differently (Foo, Fuu, Fu, Phu, Foowe, and Rjwtle, for each different country).

As for Mr. Foo, the last name "Foo" is sort of uncommon, but not weird. It's sort of like naming someone "Earth" (or "Terra," which is somewhat more common), but without the association with hippies.

Phase 1 History and Comic Background

This comic originated as a little guest thing on That Was McPherson! Shane was on vacation for a few weeks, and asked me to fill in for him. Despite having a somewhat...smallish amount of artistic talent, I got the help of good ol' Superpaint and churned out three weeks worth of Mr. Foo. My intent was to simply end there, and maybe continue things later if Shane needed me again, but I had too many ideas, and couldn't resist making a regular comic out of Mr. Foo. So here it is. The McPherson stuff has become Phase I and is available in the archives here or at the That Was McPherson! page (see links section).
